Anniversary Gift Ideas by Year

The anniversary is in two weeks and someone has told you it is the wood one. That is either a helpful nudge or a puzzle, depending on how literally you take it.

Here are the traditional and modern lists translated into accessories — with honest notes about the years where the material does not become jewelry and you are better off ignoring it.

Years 1 to 10

Year Traditional Modern What it means for jewelry
1 Paper Clocks Not a jewelry year. A watch fits the modern list.
2 Cotton China Skip the material. A simple everyday pendant reads better than a literal interpretation.
3 Leather Glass A leather-cord pendant, or glass and crystal drop earrings.
4 Fruit / flowers Appliances Floral motifs work well here — a flower pendant or botanical studs.
5 Wood Silverware The modern list is the easy one: sterling silver, in almost any form.
6 Iron / candy Wood Stainless steel is the wearable stand-in for iron and it holds up better than iron ever would.
7 Wool / copper Desk sets Copper and rose-gold tones. A rose-tone chain or bangle.
8 Bronze / pottery Linens / lace Bronze and warm brass tones, or filigree that echoes lace.
9 Pottery / willow Leather Ceramic or stone-set pieces, or back to a leather cord.
10 Tin / aluminium Diamond The first stone year. Moissanite and cubic zirconia give the look honestly at a fraction of the price — just do not let anyone call them diamonds, including us.

Years 11 to 25

Year Traditional What it means for jewelry
11 Steel Straightforward — a steel bangle or chain.
12 Silk / linen Not a jewelry year. A scarf, or a pearl-look piece for the sheen.
13 Lace Filigree and openwork.
14 Ivory Skip it. Ivory is illegal to trade in most of the world and we would not stock a substitute pretending otherwise. Cream-toned stones read the same and carry none of that.
15 Crystal Crystal or cubic zirconia drops and hoops.
20 China / platinum Cool-toned metals — sterling silver or steel with a bright finish.
25 Silver The clearest year on the list. Sterling silver, and something they will actually wear.

Three honest notes

The list is a prompt, not a rule

Nobody has ever been disappointed by a gift because it was crystal in a steel year. Use the list when it gives you an idea and ignore it when it does not.

Match the person, not the year

If they wear one small pendant every day and nothing else, a statement collar is a beautiful object that lives in a drawer. Look at what is actually on them right now.

Order early

Our pieces arrive in 9-18 business days because they ship from our overseas fulfillment partners. For a date that matters, order at least four calendar weeks ahead. We would rather say that plainly than take an order we know will arrive late.

If you are not sure of the size

Necklaces are the safest gift — 18 inches suits most people and most necklines. Earrings need no size at all. Rings are the riskiest; if you are guessing, our size guide has a method for measuring a ring they already own without asking them.
